This great, international educational tradition is now being replicated in Dubai. The format has been modified so as to encompass all syllabi, American, British as well as Indian & Pakistani amongst others. Special allowances are made for pronunciations and spellings that differ in American & British systems. The contest is open to students from all schools in Dubai from grades 6 to 10 in the Academic year between September 2015 to March 2016.
This high profile educational community initiative encourages learning, discipline and a desire to excel in students. They have a chance to learn the intricacies of the English language, have a chance to master words from not only from Latin , Greek and French, but also from many esoteric languages, like Arabic, Hindi, Persian and Malay.
They begin to gain invaluable knowledge of the rules of English and see the patterns in the English Language the use of prefixes & suffixes, the etymology, origins and root words. The focus of the contest is not only in memorizing spellings and in "getting it right" but also in increasing their understanding of words, their meaning, history and use. In addition to improving spelling, the Bee also aids children in learning concepts, improving comprehension and developing study skills. As a result, they read and write more effectively and score higher on standardized tests, college prep tests and beyond.
The benefits of spelling bees extend beyond language: since children are required to spell words while on stage, kids also develop self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure. The contest in Dubai is supported by several socially responsible business organizations. The contest will also be intensively promoted through Press, Radio, and TV.
Apart from the extensive media attention, the finalists of the championship are awarded scores of gifts such as IPads, IPhones, Laptops, LCD TV's etc. The Gulf Scholarship will award cash prizes towards waiver of annual tuition fees. The winner not only gets the Champions Trophy, but a cash award of Dhs, 25,000!
The lessons learned by participating in a spelling bee can last a lifetime, and benefits all those that participate, well beyond the constraints of a competition. The contest empowers and engages students in enhancing their own education. This spells success for their future.
The contest is monitored and audited by KPMG, and is open to all nationalities, on an equal and competitive basis.
